In connection with an ongoing ARC-funded project on the poetics and politics of sung narrative genres from the New Guinea Highlands, funds have been awarded by the Asia-Pacific Futures Network to allow two interested BA honours students to participate in an upcoming workshop where Australian- and PNG-based researchers on the project will present and discuss their findings. The workshop will be held in Goroka, PNG, June 19-23, 2006. The aim of the funding for honours students is to give them an opportunity to develop a research focus in this area that
could become the basis for their honours thesis and/or possible postgraduate work later on. The project is an interdisciplinary one, involving socio-cultural anthropology, linguistics and ethnomusicology.

The Northern Territory Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) has released the Indigenous Languages and Culture Report, the culmination of a two-year review into Indigenous language and culture programs in Northern Territory schools.

In particular the review responded to the recommendations that Indigenous perspectives should be strengthened in all Northern Territory (NT) schools and high-quality curriculum material, providing an understanding of Australian Indigenous languages and culture, should be made available to schools.

Since the commencement of this review there has been an imperative set by the NT Government to have an increased focus on Indigenous languages and culture programs in DEET schools and ‘put bilingual education back on the agenda’ (Ministerial Statement, 24 August 2005).

The Indigenous Languages and Culture in NT Schools Review was tasked to deliver a document that:

* describes the continuum of Indigenous languages and culture activity in NT schools including a resource and funding index
* summarises the views of DEET personnel and school staff regarding access to, and appropriateness of, languages and culture resources
* provides findings and recommendations regarding future directions for the range of Indigenous languages and culture programs in NT schools
* provides findings and recommendations regarding future directions for the Two Way Learning program
* develops a draft NT government policy to guide the development and delivery of Indigenous languages and culture initiatives and programs in all NT schools.

The implementation of the recommendations of this report will ensure that all students in Northern Territory schools have access to relevant and high quality Indigenous languages and culture programs.

Abstract

This paper explores the internal and external factors that enhance or constrain a trained indigenous language researcher in documenting or maintaining their traditional languages. The effectiveness of indigenous adult linguistic training on Australia’s endangered languages was assessed in remote and urban language communities across Northern Australia through interviews with case and focus groups and through surveys completed by linguists and language organisations associated with these language communities. This paper will discuss the number of indigenous linguistic graduates that use their skills to document and maintain their traditional language, and the types of language programs they work on after completing their training, as well as how effective these programs have been in their communities. The results of the research to-date show that not only do training issues affect the documentation and maintenance of Australia's endangered languages, but so do sociological, environmental and, more significantly, cultural issues. Linguistic organisations and registered training organisations may not be aware that these issues exist. Some of the issues cannot be addressed through training but can be addressed through language and linguistic organisations. Other issues are so embedded in culture that they may not be able to be changed in some language communities, but are important for other people to be aware of when working with these communities. The findings of this research provide an understanding of why people train in linguistics, the types of training they do and why they use or do not use these skills to maintain or document their endangered languages. The results will assist educators, curriculum developers and the wider education and linguistic industry in developing appropriate and effective training for those wanting to maintain or document endangered languages. The ultimate goal of this research project is for indigenous Australians to document more of their traditional languages before it is too late to do so.

Using Alchemist, you can identify morphemes, along with a number of important characteristics of the morphemes, such as whether they are roots or affixes, the degree of analyst certainty, and allomorphs of the morpheme.

Alchemist is also a good general tool for sorting and filtering lists of words, because it allows the user to easily use regular expressions applied to words.

well as the centre's VET Certificates in Own Language Work.

The successful applicant will have tertiary-level qualifications in
linguistics at honours or masters level or above, and will be able to teach
adult students across a wide range of curriculum areas within the
discipline.

The appointment will be for one year in the first instance, with a
possibility of renewal thereafter.

CRLC - Call for papers

The ANU Centre for Research on Language Change (CRLC) will be holding a workshop at the Australian Linguistic Society conference in July 2006.

The workshop will take place on Sunday 9th July at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
The theme of the workshop will be Grammatical change: theory and description. We welcome submissions dealing with any of the following:
-- data-based studies of grammatical change in particular languages
-- theoretical aspects of change
-- contact-induced change
-- language-internal change
-- reconstruction of changes

Submissions should include the author's name and affiliation, contact details (including email and postal addresses), the paper's title, and an abstract of no more than 400 words. The final deadline for submissions is 28 February 2006. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by 31 March 2006. Please note that the format of the sessions will be 20 minutes for each paper, followed by 10 minutes for questions.

Intertheoretical approaches to complex verb constructions

Eleventh Rice Biennial Symposium

Date: March 16th-18th, 2006

Rice University's Linguistics Department will be hosting its Eleventh
Linguistic Symposium in March 2006. The aim of the symposium is to draw
together different theoretical approaches to the various types of
complex predicates found in the languages of the world. Emphasis is on
drawing together work on different language families and in different
linguistic frameworks.

The current confirmed speakers are:

directed towards the symposium theme; we anticipate having space for
approximately three more speakers. Talks will be 45 minutes, with 15
minutes for questions. While there will be no formal position paper,
speakers will be asked to keep in mind a general set of questions which
will form the main issues for discussion at the symposium. It is
anticipated that a collection of papers from the volume will be
published following the symposium.

Language centre talks up jobs scheme

The Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre says it has achieved outstanding results from an employment program allowing Aborigines to work in their own languages.

The Community Development Employment Program is unique to the Pilbara region and is believed to be the first of its kind which relates specifically to maintaining a language.

Wangka Maya's manager, Fran Haintz, says since the program began 12 months ago, more than 25 people have been employed as Aboriginal language workers.

Ms Haintz says the languages of the region are now being used and recorded properly.

"We have somebody analysing the differences between two Aboriginal languages of the northern part of the Pilbara and that helps people to understand language better and then therefore it'll be a lot stronger because understanding it has been more intellectualised than ever before," she said.
